Institutional Architecture

Research themed under institutional architecture

How does institutional architecture influence the possibilities for productive agriculture, employment-generating firms and remunerative self-employment – and hence the prospects for pro-poor growth?

In this research IPPG investigates the impacts of institutional architecture relating to the politics of property rights, informal institutions, contracting institutions, political institutions and collective action.

IPPG's studies combine qualitative and quantitative work, drawing where possible on existing literatures to examine the quality of transactions, and organisation within and between firms and farms. How does the state help – or hinder? When, and how, does private initiative substitute for the activity of states in ensuring effective constraints and incentives on producer behaviour?
