State-business relations (SBR) - new findings
The first Indian results from IPPG's major research project looking at state-business relations were released at a seminar, Effective State Business Relations: When Does It Happen and Why Does It Matter? in Jaipur, India on 18 December 2009. The results, drawn from a study that constructs a state-business relations (SBR) measure for the 16 major Indian states, had a few surprises in store, with some of the top economic performers - such as Gujarat - failing to find a place in the top half of the league table.
A range of IPPG research papers on state-business relations is now available (see New Publications, below), following a 3-day workshop in Jaipur where researchers from across India and sub-Saharan Africa shared their findings. The Jaipur events were co-hosted by IPPG and CUTS International, and an article, State-Business Relations: Now and Then, by Pradeep S. Mehta and Siddhartha Mitra (respectively, Secretary General and Research Director, CUTS International) appeared in Financial Express India on 29 November 2009.
One of the case studies in the cluster, State Business Relations and Performance of Manufacturing Sector in Andhra Pradesh by G Alivelu, K Srinivasulu and M Gopinath Reddy, was selected for presentation at the International Conference on Emergent Business Models and Strategies for Knowledge Economy: Impact on Business Government and Society at the Indian Business Academy, Bangalore, India (19-21 November 2009).

IPPG researcher success in African Professorship Competition
IPPG researcher Dr Jean Claude Saha, of the University of Ngaoundere, Cameroon, emerged as one of the top laureates at the14th edition of the Professorship competition, organised every two years by the Conseil Africain et Malgache pour l'Enseignement Superieur (CAMES), a competition aimed at promoting deserving African university lecturers to the rank of Professor. More than 90 African lecturers took part in this year's competition, 36 of whom were in the Economics category. Candidates came from nine countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Congo, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, Niger, Togo, Senegal and Gabon). Dr Jean Claude Saha, in part thanks to his IPPG paper, emerged in second position and following this success, becomes Professor Saha.

Dr. Dibyendu Maiti of the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi, has received two plaudits for his IPPG research. In December Dr Maiti was given the India Social Science Research Award 2009 for his IPPG paper, Institutions, Networks and Industrialisation: Field level evidence of fragmentation and flexibility from India.
The award, presented by Canada's International Development Research Centre, celebrates best research practices in social sciences in India. It recognises young research talent in India and celebrates research that has demonstrated impact on policy and practice, or has enhanced public understanding of behavioural and social science principles.
Another study by Dr Maiti, Regional Openness, Income Growth and Disparity across Major India states during 1980-2004, has been shortlisted for the Global Development Network annual award. Dr Maiti will present his paper, which draws on insights from his IPPG work, at the Eleventh Annual Global Development Conference in Prague, in January 2010, where the awards will be announced.
