The Institutional Architecture of Two Rural Communities

In this study with a focus on the determinants of growth and poverty, the economic institutions of two contrasting rural areas will be investigated. Analysis will be based on econometric models using data from representative household surveys, from the beginning of the 1990s, and structured interviews with relevant public and private agents in order to create a mapping of the local networks and their links to other power brokers at higher levels. The aim is to try to contribute to the analysis of the dynamics of rural territorial development based on three key elements: social agents and the interactions; the institutions that are promoted by such actions; and how this affects both growth and poverty.

There are two papers from this joint project: 'The socio-political matrix and economic development in Chile' by Manuel A. Garretón M. (RIMISP) and 'The functioning of economic institutions in two Chilean territories' by Eduardo Ramírez (RIMISP).
